[TUSCALOOSA, ALA., JULY 2023] — In early 1953, as the Polio outbreak was quickly making its way through Montgomery County, medical officials hoped to stave off the epidemic with gamma globulin, inoculating more than 30,000 young people. In the Summer 2023 Issue of Alabama Heritage, author Keith Krawczynski looks at the medical and public response to the epidemic.
The cover story focuses on Tuscaloosa County’s Linda Muñoz, a mosaic artist. Her work can be found throughout the cities of Tuscaloosa and Northport. Muñoz expresses her love of history through her work and inspires others to pursue their own artistic identities.
Several other stories highlighted in this issue include the life of James Moore and the Muscogee Nation, Sammy Younge Jr. and the rise of modern southern activism, and exploring Mobile’s colonial past.
Regular departments including Alabama Governors, From the Archives, Reading the Southern Past and much more.
