The Alabama Territory
Alabama Heritage, the Alabama Bicentennial Commission, and the Alabama Tourism Department offer this serialized history of Alabama’s road to statehood as part of Alabama’s bicentennial celebrations that will run from 2017 through 2019. "Quarter by Quarter" allows you to experience the story of the territorial era as it unfolds, ultimately culminating in Alabama’s acceptance into the Union as a state—sometimes describing pivotal events, sometimes describing daily life, but always illuminating a world in flux. We will wait for the outcomes as our forebears did—over time.

Becoming Alabama
To commemorate Alabama’s experiences related to the Creek War, the Civil War, and the Civil Rights Movement, Alabama Heritage has joined with the Summersell Center for Study of the South, the University of Alabama Department of History, and the Alabama Tourism Department to create this special department. Quarter by quarter we take you to the corresponding seasons 200, 150, and 50 years ago—sometimes describing the most pivotal events, sometimes describing daily life, but always illuminating a world in flux. We will wait for the ultimate outcomes as our forebears did—over time.

History in Ruins
A photo essay
Alabama’s ruins evoke a sense of nostalgic romanticism, but tell a story of neglect, abandonment, and missed opportunities for restoration and preservation. Please enjoy the photographs taken by Alabama Heritage team members as they travel across our state.

Places in Peril
Each year, the Places in Peril program calls public attention to a select number of Alabama's threatened historic and archaeological sites. By highlighting their plight through statewide publicity, Places in Peril seeks to generate support for their preservation. The Alabama Historical Commission and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation choose each year's list based on relative importance of the site, urgency, and other factors.

Recipes
Occasionally, Alabama Heritage publishes a recipe within a feature that might be something handed down for generations within a family, or a long-lost recipe discovered and celebrated once again. Here, we will continue to add recipes as they are featured in our magazine. And if you try them at your own home, let us know how they turned out!
