Built and developed in Huntsville Alabama, the Saturn V Rocket proved to be invaluable during the Cold War Space Race. Between the 1950s and 1960s, Huntsville brimmed with energy due to the many scientists and engineers hired by the U.S. The lead went to Werner von Braun, a former German scientist brought here after World War II. He led the development of a series of rockets he named Saturn. With the help of von Braun and others, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) planned to meet the expectations President John Kennedy had set forth of putting a man on the moon. From the Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Saturn V rocket would launch Apollo 11 July 16, 1969; successfully landing the first astronauts, Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins, on the moon July 20.

In Sylacauga, Alabama, often called “The Marble City,” there lies a highly sought-after deposit of the most pristine madre cream marble in the world. A 32 ½ miles long x 1.5 miles wide x 400 ft deep deposit was discovered by Dr. Edward Gantt in 1820. Artists past and present have utilized this rare quality natural resource to enhance the city of Sylacauga.
