This summer has been rewarding in so many ways. The staff at Alabama Heritage have not only been a great source of knowledge, but have been wonderful to work with. The skills that I have learned during my time here will certainly come in handy not only as I look for other jobs or internships, but in my studies at the university as well. Working at Alabama Heritage has been a truly rewarding experience, and I would definitely encourage others to give it a try as well.
As a student who is hoping to break into the world of publishing after graduation, my internships and any experience I can get in the publishing world are of the utmost importance. When I was invited to become an intern in the editorial department at Alabama Heritage, I was thrilled about all that I would learn. As my time at Alabama Heritage comes to a close, I can say that this internship has exceeded any and all expectations I had at the beginning of the summer. I have learned more than I ever expected, not only about the process of publishing a magazine, but about the history of Alabama as well. As an editorial intern, much of my time this summer was spent proofreading and fact-checking articles to be featured in upcoming issues of Alabama Heritage. After this summer, I certainly know my way around historical databases, and I find myself falling in love, yet again, with the beauty that is taking a red pen to paper. In addition to these duties, I was also able to help out with social media, as well as put together the Calendar of Events for the upcoming issue. (Many of the events are now written down in my planner.) I have also really enjoyed all that I have learned about the history of Alabama. As an out-of-state student, I did not really know much about Alabama’s history. Reading the articles this summer has allowed me to learn more about this state. Now that I know more about how Alabama was shaped and formed, Tuscaloosa feels even more like home. Many of the articles were so interesting that I had to read them through once simply to soak up all the information before even beginning to proofread. I especially enjoyed reading the “Alabama Women” department, and was thrilled when I got to read about the tumultuous life of Truman Capote. As an English major, it was fantastic to discover more about one of Alabama’s most prominent writers. Every single day, I learned something new, making me excited to come to work every day.
