Old Greene County Courthouse Complex, Eutaw, Greene County, 1840-1869 (Places in Peril 1997)10/20/1997 ![]() Three buildings make up the Greene County Courthouse Complex-the Probate Office (1856), the Grand Jury Building (1842), and the old Greene County Courthouse (1869), one of the last Greek Revival buildings constructed in the state of Alabama. The original frame courthouse, constructed in 1840, burned in 1868 and was replaced with the current stucco-covered brick building, which was constructed on the same foundations as its predecessor and basically according to the same plan. One of the few intact nineteenth-century public-building complexes left in the state, these landmark structures now stand at a juncture between the past and the future. Currently the complex is partially abandoned. In 1996 Greene County applied for and received an emergency grant from the National Trust for Historic Preservation to prepare a structural report and adaptive-use plan for the courthouse. Now the county is looking for the funds to implement the plan. In the meantime, general deterioration and rain damage continue.

Alabama's Endangered Historic LandmarksEach year since 1994, Alabama Heritage has highlighted threatened historic sites throughout Alabama. The “Places in Peril” list has identified more than 215 imperiled historic resources throughout the state, and is compiled by the Alabama Historical Commission and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation. The locations highlight the results of deferred maintenance, perceived obsolescence, development pressures, and lack of funding—forces that now more than ever threaten our cultural legacy. But awareness is a powerful force, too, and can cultivate a renewed determination to be responsible stewards of our heritage. For more information, visit the AHC or the ATHP websites. Alabama Heritage is proud to bring to you a selection of the places designated as perilous. Please keep your comments to information relevant to the featured place in peril.
