Alabama Heritage has faced many changes recently, with the retirement of two key team members, promotions of the three of us who remain on staff, and a physical move of our offices back to the University of Alabama’s main campus. As we step into our new roles, we are mindful of and grateful for the opportunities before us, including our treasured relationship with you. Though all three of us have worked for the magazine for many years (more than 40 years combined), we still appreciate the enormous responsibility of bringing stories of Alabama’s history to you each quarter. Every issue allows all of us to open ourselves up to new ideas, reflect on the past, and, as a result, imagine a new possible future for our state.
Alabama Heritage has passed through various hands over the years, and we have been fortunate to be guided by some of the best. We are confident that we will build upon their legacy. Our magazine publishes work by some of the region’s best writers and historians, and our relationship with the historical community, especially, is one that we treasure. They are one of our most valued and appreciated resources, trusted with the task of uncovering our state’s past in each issue. Many of these writers have become our dear friends; many of our readers have as well. We continually receive compliments, either in notes that you have written to us when you are renewing your subscription or over the phone when you call and want to talk about what’s on the cover or relay to us a fascinating story about how one of our features has impacted your life. Alabama Heritage would not exist without our dedicated and loyal readers.
With a change in leadership, often you might wonder if there will be dramatic changes across the board. You might notice a few tweaks here and there to refocus on the importance of our storytelling. We will continue to build upon partnerships that we’ve formed throughout the state—whether it’s co-sponsoring events where we have the chance to meet you in person or giving young scholars an opportunity to hone their research skills by writing for our print magazine and online blog.
Our primary goal is to bring to life history for every Alabamian— to educate, inspire, and entertain all of our readers. So many stories remain untold, and each one helps us think about what it means to be an Alabamian. Alabama Heritage serves the entire state, and we welcome story ideas. Our hope is that when you see the Alabama Heritage name, you know that we are a resource that you can trust. We hope that you not only look forward to each printed magazine every quarter, but that you also read the original content on our website and follow us through our social media channels.
We look forward to continuing the important work our publication has done for more than three decades, and we want to thank each one of you for continuing along on this journey with us.
Sincerely,
Rebecca Todd Minder, Director
Susan E. Reynolds, Editor
Cindy Sanford, Circulation
