Inside
the Wire: Aliceville

Dear Friends:
Our fourth installment of “From the Vault” features one the most
popular articles ever published by Alabama Heritage. From the winter
issue of 1988, we are resurrecting Randy Wall’s “Inside the Wire:
Aliceville and the Afrika Corps,” an
article about a German prisoner-of-war camp established at Aliceville
in 1942. There, thousands of soldiers created a harmonious community
where they labored on local farms, played sports, educated each
other, cultivated gardens, and dabbled in the arts. Upon their
return to a destitute Germany after the war, some longed to go
back to the good life in Aliceville.
Please enjoy this treat,
and pass it along to friends who might not be on our email list
yet. If you have suggestions for old favorites that should be resurrected,
you can contact me at Donna.Cox@ua.edu.
Happy Reading!
