Criteria
for Selecting Places in Peril
The annual
list of Places in Peril is only a sampling of the many threatened
historic or pre-historic resources from around the state. Before
the list comes out, a committee of staffers from the Alabama
Historical Commission and the Alabama Trust for Historic Preservation
meets to review nominations and make the final decision on
which properties should be included as a “Places in Peril” for
that year. The following is the criteria they use to make this
determination:
FACTOR #1: Significance
In terms of intrinsic artistic, architectural, historical, social, or archaeological
value, why is the resource significant?
Is the resource of local, state, regional or national significance?
FACTOR #2: Urgency of Threat
What is/are the specific threat/s making this resource endangered?
Does the resource face imminent danger or destruction (within
months or less than a year)?
If the resource is not facing imminent danger or destruction,
what other factors make it a candidate for “Places in
Peril”?
FACTOR #3: Viability
Who is trying save this resource?
Do they have a viable plan to save this resource now and
to preserve it in the future?
FACTOR #4: Impact of Listing
How will the resource benefit from being listed as a “Places
in Peril”?
Could listing have an adverse effect on the resource; is
so, why?
FACTOR #5: Other Factors
Are there any other factors not mentioned above that
could support having this resource listed as a “Places in Peril”?
